Thank you for taking the time to participate in the listening sessions to help inform the Howard University Presidential Search. The listening session were hosted by a member of the Presidential Search Committee and facilitated by our search firm, Isaacson, Miller.
The objective of these listening sessions were to hear directly from you regarding your sense of the important opportunities and challenges the president will need to address as well as the qualities and characteristics you would like to see in the next 18th President of Howard University.
The listening sessions were held on various dates and times which are listed below. In addition, participants only needed to attend one session, not all three sessions, within their stakeholder community.
In preparation for the listening session, the following framing questions were considered:
- From your perspective, what are the greatest opportunities and/or the most pressing challenges facing Howard at this moment and in the foreseeable future?
- What qualifications, characteristics, and/or experiences would you identify as most important for the next president?
- What are the unique and/or distinctive aspects of Howard University that are critical for the next president to understand and embrace?
The insights gleaned from these stakeholder listening sessions were to help inform the detailed Position Profile that was published on the Howard University Presidential Search website and disseminated widely to potential candidates and those who may offer candidate recommendations. The document provided a compelling description of the history, mission, and ambitions of the University as well as a realistic and persuasive picture of the opportunities, challenges, measures of success, and ideal qualifications for the role.
We encouraged people to share the names of individuals whom they recommended as potential candidates or who may be well positioned to recommend others. If you were unable to attend the listening session, or if you had additional information to share, you were also invited to complete a stakeholder survey https://www.research.net/r/52X6896. You could also submit recommendations and insights via email to: HowardPresident@imsearch.com. The link to apply for the position or nominate someone via Isaacson, Miller's website is https://www.imsearch.com/search-detail/8678.
The Presidential Search Committee structured a process to hear from as many voices as possible from all segments of the Howard University community. In addition to listening sessions with students, faculty, staff and alumni, the Presidential Search Committee scheduled sessions with the leadership of student organizations, the HUAA, the Faculty Senate and staff organizations (both current and retired staff), to garner thoughtful input. Listening sessions were also planned with deans and directors, University officers, and trustees. The participation in this process helped the Presidential Search Committee identify candidates who will take Howard University into the future with the 18th President.
Thank you for your participation in this important effort. We look forward to receiving your insights.
